Clear Winner
Product Rating

Product Review

These EV ZXa1s are amazing for a micro-system. At only 19lbs, you can easily carry both at the same time. I use them with a sub, so I use the "with sub" 100Hz cutoff option. All sounds seem to "cut" through. They do not need any EQing to get it to sound "right" with bright highs and nice mids. I don't think there's a better 8" powered speaker in the market. A "clear" winner with balanced sound and intelligibility. Ideal for karaoke, speeches, and DJ events. Downsides? For music, you will need a sub, the bass is just not enough. But who expects to be able to use an 8 inch speaker at high dB levels without a sub? Also, it doesn't have an RCA or 3.5mm input. So if you want to play music from a laptop or smartphone, you will have to use a mixer with XLR or 1/4" TRS balanced outputs, USB interface or 3.5 to XLR converter box. All in all, just get it!

Incredible sound in such a small package

Product Review

I bought these speakers to be used for ceremonies primarily but have now been using them in small reception venues and W O W!!!!!! The sound is incredible and I haven’t even bought the subs for them yet. You want great sound in a small package....these are the ones to get.

Portable Quality Sound

Your general opinion of this product.

These are great little speakers. They are high quality, lightweight, have good power, good sound and are useful in several applications.

They seem to be very sturdy and well made. A few reviewers from PA rental companies have stated that they hold up well in the abusive rental business.

I have to say that I have a much different opinion than the reviewer from SD. I find these speakers easy to pick up and carry (they weigh less than 20 lbs - a little kid could carry them). I also had no problems pole mounting or balancing the weight distribution. The hole is at the back, because if it were in the middle it would have to go through the woofer. Now that WOULD be a bad design. I also have to say that I had no problems slipping the covers off or on - no snagging. As to actual set-up, they are pretty much plug and play. Nothing to it.

I bought these because they are small and light, and have good quality sound. They are useful for FOH or monitor position, and a they are a good value. My primary use for these speakers is live sound floor wedge monitoring, and they excel in that capacity. If you are in a band and you are looking for a small, powerful, personal monitor, or you are solo artist looking for a good quality, portable powered PA speaker/monitor,and give these a look.

The tone is very clear, up front and present in the vocal range. To say that there is "no bass whatsoever" is ridiculous, unless the 100hz low-cut SUB switch is engaged. In that case, it's doing what it's designed to do - work with a Sub. I also think we need to manage our expectation with our application. On a pole mount, it has surprisingly good bass for it's size, and on the floor as a monitor wedge it absolutely pumps out the bottom. Want even more? Add 3db @80 hz from the mixer and feel the kick hard - measured @100db - which is just as loud as the major-label artist I saw last night at a very large venue, 10 yards from the stage. (it was loud) No bass?? You must be joking. Now, I would not run FOH with ANY speakers without subs, and I will tell you, the ZXA1s combined with the ZXA1-subs sound absolutely incredible! Highly Recommended!!

Unlike K8's, these REQUIRE a sub!

Can't tell how reliable they are over the long term because I returned them.

The speaker could use an EQ.

The handle is just a hole at the top back of the speaker. Your fingers have nothing to curl around, and the surface inside the hole is completely smooth. Plus the hole is at the back of the speaker, and all the weight is at the front. Therefore the speaker really wants to slip out of your hand. Terrible design. The cover snags on the XLR jack's metal release tab every time you put it on or remove it. It's only a matter of time until you tear the covers. The pole mount is at the extreme back of the speaker. All the weight hangs off the front. Even though they are light, that's still a 20 pound imbalance on one side of your speaker stand. If you don't position the speaker over a leg of the stand, you can push it over with a very light tap. On a smaller stand, a heavy breath might even topple it.

There is no bass whatsoever. They are unusable without a sub. I did 2 events with them that K8's would have blown away and I might as well have had a boom box. I don't even consider them full range speakers. I returned them and I'm awaiting my new K8's.

Your general opinion of this product.

The combination of a few design flaws and disappointing sound caused me to return these speakers.

Pure Quality...

The build quality is second to none. EV is legendary for it's build quality and this speaker lives up to that.

Quality sound and lightweight is it's best features.

Take it out the box, plug-in, power on and jam. Can't be any simpler then that.

Sound is balanced, warm and powerful from such a small speaker.

little monster that could

very good quality. Wish it had a knob instead of a set screw for the pole mount and the handle could be a little more ergonomic.

hi-pass filter. cool running amp. light weight. pole mount. lays flat.

pretty simple powered speaker

sounds good, not as clean at lower volumes, but it's not a studio monitor either.
