I have 3 RME interfaces and 2 DSP card systems that needed to have a central clock source. Having them connected in typical fashion to one of the devices and then distributing that clock to others, was always leaving some additional i/o falling into 'sync' instead of 'lock' in RME's control panel. This would mean occasional errors on an ADAT connection or etc.
Now I have 5 BNC slaved devices plus 1 w/ AES & another with SPDIF, all clocked to this black lion unit. I would wax lyric about soundstage and so on, but truthfully self clocking is the way to go with any competently produced soundcard that's above budget quality (and RME certainly is above budget gear imho).
I now have a dedicated VCV Rack machine (also a Bidule host etc) connected to my DSP card system, connected to my primary DAW rig, connected to yet another machine that I can run anything from realtime visual applications to cpu intensive sample libraries & niche audio software (thus keeping my DAW machine pure and focused on task).

For those of us that need a great external clock to sync our gear, The MKII XB Word Clock is the best in the business. From its compact design and ease Of use, the MKII XB will get the job done. Even if you using it for a better clocking source than the internal clock, the MKII XB will have your recordings and mixes sounding better. I was made a true believer in this product. After using other clocks in the past, I found the MKII XB to be the best one yet.

The MKIII XB word clock has ultra low 0.6 picoseconds RMS jitter (no phasing or distortion issues) and sounds amazing!
