The Roland DJ-808 Professional DJ Controller begins as a four-channel mixer for the four Serato decks that it can control. Each channel offers an individual trim control, a three-band EQ, ten-segment LED metering, a cue button, and the fader. In addition, the onboard Channel FX – Dub Echo, Jet, Noise, and Filter – can be applied to each channel individually. The Izotope and other effects contained in Serato DJ, on the other hand, are applied directly to each deck.
The jog wheel/platters feature super-low latency touch response, allowing for accurate scratching and cueing. The platters themselves offer Slip, Reverse, and Vinyl modes for achieving just the right feel and full 100 mm pitch faders that provide precise control. Adjacent to each platter are the Key Sync buttons, offering direct access to the Serato Pitch’n Time software – the license is included with your DJ-808. Nearby are the Auto Loop command buttons, which offer a simple way to create accurate, beat-matched looping on the fly.
One of the highlights of the Roland DJ-808 is the 16 RGB illuminated and velocity-sensing touchpads. These multifunction pads provide performance access to features such as Hot Cues and Cue Loops. In addition, these touchpads allow real-time musical access to the onboard Roland TR-S Drum sounds and the Serato Sample sounds. The near one-to-one relationship between software functions and hardware controllers brings the DJ-808 and the Serato DJ software together at the deepest levels of integration.
We Got the Beat
The Roland TR-S drum machine was developed specifically for inclusion in the DJ-808. The sounds are classic Roland, as is its intuitive grid-style programming. The TR-S actually provides the distinctive instrument sounds – Kick, Snare, Open Hi-Hat, Closed Hi-Hat – found in the TR-909, TR-808, TR-606, and TR-707. Individual volume sliders are provided for each drum type.
Recording a pattern is easy - simply select a drum sound and specify which beats in the pattern will play that sound. Up to 16 Patterns can be saved and loaded for instant access. Even after the pattern is recorded, it is easy to replace any or all drum sounds, creating a custom kit of your favorite Roland sounds. In addition, the TR-S drum machine provides quick access to the Sampler in Serato DJ, allowing the Serato Sampler sounds to be played by the TR-S drum machine.
In another example of deep integration, the DJ-808 touchpads can be used to play the TR-S and Sampler sounds in real-time, as accents when programming, or create rolls and fill patterns using these same sounds. The Touchpads can also be used to call up and cue groups of patterns to play in succession. Additionally, the TR-S drum machine can instantly sync to the current song.
The TR-S drum machine was created using Roland ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology to mimic all of the component behavior and controller interaction in the original circuitry, thereby creating a faithful replica of the classic instrument.
Another tool in the DJ808’s arsenal is Roland’s powerful Roland Voice Transformer technology. The Voice Transformer offers a variable gain control, two-band equalizer, and reverb to create a compelling vocal sound. The fun begins when using the Pitch and Formant knobs to manipulate the voice in unusual ways. The Auto Pitch button instantly matches the microphone pitch to the current pitch of the song being played, creating dramatic musical effects on the fly. The Voice Transformer features a three position switch providing On, Off, and Ducking options.
The Nerve Center
The DJ808 is well equipped to sit at the center of your setup. The front edge panel is host to both 1/4" and 1/8" (3.5mm) headphone jacks tied to a volume knob, a mix/cue balance knob, and a Mono Split/Stereo switch for the maximum in monitoring options. The mixer provides both Master and Booth level controls. The Master output exits the DJ808 either via balanced XLR connectors or a pair of stereo RCA jacks. The Booth outputs feature balanced 1/4" TRS connectors. Each of the four input channels is equipped with a stereo pair of RCA connectors.
Switches on the front edge allow Channels 1 and 2 to receive a line level signal or a signal from a turntable; a grounding lug is provided to reduce phono hum. An additional set of switches allow Channels 3 and 4 to receive a line level signal, or a signal arriving via the AIRA Link/USB Host connectors. The microphone input includes a sensitivity knob and is equipped with a combination jack that can accept either an XLR cable or a 1/4" plug.
The Roland DJ808 Professional DJ Controller includes a traditional MIDI out port, and a USB connector. Two additional HOST USB jacks allow the DJ808 to connect to other Roland products that use the AIRA Link system to share audio and timing information. In either case, AIRA Link or MIDI, the DJ808 can instantly sync with your other products to create a single, unified, music production system.
