Product Description

The Audio-Technica AT4040 Cardioid Condenser Studio Microphone is a versatile large-diaphragm mic that features a true condenser design which is externally polarized and utilizes Audio-Technica's latest transducer technology with state-of-the-art surface-mount electronics and transformerless circuitry. Audio-Technica's engineering team developed an entirely new large-diaphragm element for the AT4040, designed specifically to provide smooth, natural sonic characteristics with a wide dynamic range and the ability to handle extremely high SPL's. The AT4040 has a cardioid polar pattern and utilizes an aged, vapor-deposited-gold large-diaphragm capacitor element. A nickel-plated brass element baffle has been precision-machined to provide enhanced element stability and optimal sensitivity. An open acoustical environment of the symmetrical housing assembly minimizes unwanted internal reflections. In addition, the AT4040's two-micron-thick diaphragm provides accurate reproduction of even the subtlest sounds without sacrificing high-frequency performance. The AT4040 features an extended flat frequency response (20-20,000 Hz), a wide dynamic range (133 dB, 1 kHz at max SPL), and can handle high SPL's (up to 145 dB, 1 kHz at 1% T.H.D., 155 dB with 10 dB pad). The AT4040's distinctive transformerless circuitry virtually eliminates low-frequency distortion and retains the ability to deliver high-speed transients. The AT4040 requires 48V phantom power and has a switchable low-frequency roll-off (at 80 Hz, 12 dB/octave). In addition, a heavy-duty Audio-Technica AT8449 shock mount is included to provide mechanical isolation and secure mounting, as is a dust cover and protective microphone carrying case.

great mic - cannot beat the price
Your general opinion of this product.
Great mic...tight. EQ is not necessary if you place it right. Pattern is tight so background noise can be minimized. Pad and low cut are nice especially if your mixer lacks them. If you have a decent mic pre you don't hear the 4040; just the source (no noise). Vocals sound beautiful, pure and real. Buy two.

On a budget? GET THIS MIC.
Your general opinion of this product.

QUALITY:
I was very impressed with the build quality of this mic. No complaints here. The shock mount is a little wobbly, but functional.

FEATURES:
Again, the shock mount holds the mic with rubber bands and therefore feels a little wobbly.

EASE OF USE:
Very easy to get a good sound.

VALUE:
Great mic for the price. No question.

SOUND:
Very natural and neutral. I recorded myself first and found it sounded exactly like me. A lot of mics can't capture my voice that precisely.

STYLE:
R & B, Rock, Acoustic.

MUSIC EXPERIENCE:
Over 25 years experience.

OVERALL:
Overall, a great mic for the money. I prefer it over the more expensive AT-4033, as it sounds more natural without so much high-end hype.

A very good microphone
Your general opinion of this product.
I did quite a bit of research when I started to put my home studio together. I wanted the best I could afford, but I couldn't afford to be disapointed very often. I read reviews of dozens of large diaphram condensers some costing more, some costing less, and decided that I could afford the Audio Technica 4040, and one other (less expensive) mic. I already owned a few stage mics, but good quality recording demands a good quality mic. This mic sounds great, and is very well built. It easily lives up to it's claims, and is the mainstay of my studio. The sensitivity amazed me (after many years with Shure a few and other good quality stage mics, I just wasn't prepared for what a large diaphram condenser was capable of). The frequency response is relatively flat (a good thing, no frequncies are too loud or soft, unless you want to EQ it that way). I have used it for vocals (great) stringed instruments (great) and soft wind instruments and hand percussion (great, great). The manufacturer cl
