Product Description

The Neumann TLM103 Anniversary is the ideal large diaphragm microphone for all professional and semi-professional applications requiring the utmost in sound quality on a limited budget. This special Anniversary Set includes the Neumann EA1 shock mount and a deluxe aluminum case.

By utilizing the tried and true transformerless circuit found in numerous Neumann microphones, the TLM103 features yet unattained low self-noise and the highest sound pressure level transmission. The capsule, derived from that used in the U87, has a cardioid pattern, is acoustically well- balanced and provides extraordinary attenuation of signals from the rear.

Neumann TLM103 Features
  • Large diaphragm cardioid microphone
  • Pressure-gradient transducer with one-diaphragm capsule
  • Transformerless circuitry
  • Extremely low noise: 7 dB-A v
  • Straightforward handling for homerecording and professional studios
  • High-quality professional equipment for limited budgets
  • Includes shock mount and deluxe aluminum case
Neumann TLM103 Applications
Due to the universal cardioid pattern, straightforward handling, extremely low self-noise level, and finally, the price, the TLM103 is predestined for all demanding applications from home recording to professional broadcasting and commercial recording studios.

Application Hints
  • A universal cardioid mic
  • Vocalist recording
  • Announcer's mic for broadcasting/voice over
  • Due to minimal self-noise:
    • On-air mic for radio/broadcast
    • Very low amplitude signals
    • Radio drama
    • Sampling
    • Foley/sound effects
  • Home recording and project studios
  • Spot mic for:
    • Wind instruments
    • Strings
    • Percussion
    • Guitar amps
    • Drum overhead
These are just some of the most common applications. Neumann recommends additional experimentation to gain maximum use from this microphone.

Polar Pattern
The TLM103 is equipped with a large diaphragm capsule with cardioid pattern. By focusing on this pattern, used in most recording situations, the attenuation of unwanted rear sound has been optimized. Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor.

Acoustic Features
The TLM103 is addressed from the front, marked with the red Neumann logo on the microphone body. The K103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K87, well known from the U67 / U87 microphones. The capsule has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost.

The large wire mesh headgrille protects the capsule from plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises. These characteristics are achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects.

Therefore, the microphone maintains an excellent impulse response and reproduces the finest details of music and speech without coloration.

Electrical Features
With just 7 dB-A / 17.5 dB CCIR the self-noise level of the TLM 103 is so reduced that even the smallest signals are reproduced basically noise-free. As it is capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 138 dB without distortion, the TLM103 provides a dynamic range of 131 dB, according to DIN/IEC 651. The letters TLM stand for transformerless microphone. With TLM technology the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with traditional transformers, it ensures good common mode rejection, and prevents RF interference that may influence the balanced audio signal.

Operational Safety
The entire internal construction is elastically mounted to attenuate any structure borne noise that could interfere with the TLM103's operation. Furthermore the capsule is set on an elastic mount. The frequency range reaches below 20 Hz and thus even very low bass signals are reproduced without coloration.

How Far Along Are You In Your Music Career?

Product Review

This is an incredible mic, I got this mic because of two reasons. One, many of my favorite artist use this mic too. Two, I needed an upgrade from my $100 AT2020 mic. I've had this mic for a couple months now and the mic is perfect for those who understand what they are doing and have the money to invest. If you are just starting out I would recommend you get the AT2020, I can get a similar sound with good quality out of my AT2020 but that doesn't mean it's better, the TLM is $1,300 for a reason. This mic is more refined and when it comes to mixing, it makes it easy to do because less mixing has to be done since you get a quality recording when using this mic. That being said, if you have the money make sure you have enough to spend on getting a good pre amp too, otherwise you won't be getting the full quality this thing can produce. Mics can be hard to get a feel for when listening to comparisons on youtube. To really understand what it can do you have to do the test for yourself. Like for me my AT2020 produced a great sound but overall it made my low ends of my voice sound boxy and made my high ends sound harsh, it was nothing crazy but it was noticeable when mixing. The TLM however can control my "P" pops better due to it more refined mesh. It also is smoother on the high ends of my vocals and also clearer make what I'm saying easier to hear and understand specially when mixed together with the beat. The lows are even more prominent but in a warmer and smooth way and less of the boxy popping bass I was getting with my AT2020. Now I may be making the AT2020 sound like a bad microphone when it's really not, it can be great when you know what you're doing. A lot of recording artist and engineers can make studio quality sounds with some of the most basic gear because they understand how it works and what they need to do in order to get the sound they want. That being said there is also a reason why expensive pieces of gear can do incredible things and improve the overall sound of your music. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this mic for someone who knows what they are doing and has the money to invest in this mic along with a good pre amp. If you are starting out and have the money for both this and a good pre amp then go ahead and get it, but if you are starting out and don't have much to spend then I would recommend the $100 AT2020 way. That was my first mic and I used it for 5 years, it's a good mic and a good starting place to learn how to get a studio quality sound with what you have. Hope this was helpful.

Great Workhorse Mic!

Product Review

It shouldn’t be the only mic in your locker, but it should definitely be in there! Match it with a good pre (1076, 312) and you will see great results. Great on vocals and acoustic guitars. This mic is pretty quiet too, which is vital for a typical home studio.
