The sound a ride's bell, in a compact space
This can serve as a much easier to strike alternative to your ride cymbal's bell (especially when mounted upside down as is most typically seen), as well as more consistent in sound. I suppose the downside to having consistent sound is that there is a certain lack in dynamic range you can get out of this bell.
Just like any actual bell, this has quite a bit of sustain given how think it is. Depending on the music application, the sustain can be drowned out by all the other sounds, or in quieter situations it can ring out for a long period.
Often these are seen directly stacked on top of a ride cymbal, but I find that doing so tends to block access to the ride cymbal's bell. Personally I stagger mine away from areas of cymbals I plan to strike.
