Toca Percussion
The Toca Difference
With origins from African and Cuban traditions, conga drums are probably the most popular hand drums today. Made from a variety of wood or from fiberglass, congas are available in different shapes and sizes.
Here are just a few features that set Toca Congas apart from other brands and create the Toca Difference and unmistakable Toca look and sound.
Toca Heads:
Toca conga heads are 1st quality bison skins that are graded and sorted by thickness for each particular size drum. This grading process ensures the best tonal response from each different sized drum. All Toca heads are tucked rather than sewn to prevent pull out and are mounted wet, to assure the best contact (or seat) between the bearing edge and the head.
Toca Hoops:
Toca offers two very different types of hoops for our professional series congas. Toca hoops are composed of thick metal allowing more rigidity to the hoop and even tension at all points.
- Toca's Traditional-Style Hoop is found on the 3900 Traditional Series drums and features lightweight construction to free up sound. This Traditional hoop holds the head close to the shell and gives the drum a more authentic Cuban sound.
- Toca's Exclusive Easy Play Hoop was designed with a very low collar to keep the hoop away from possibly injuring the player's hand. Toca's Easy Play hoop also stretches the conga head over the bearing edge of the drum to increase the resonance and tone. These hoops are constructed from top grade, 3 mm thick steel then plated to a high gloss finish.
- Toca's Player's Easy Play Style Hoop performs much like our professional model by giving added protection to the player and is 2.6mm thick to give that added strength.
Toca Percussion History
An Alternative Choice
During the early 90's, the music scene began to bustle with new trends. A new craze called drum circles began making headlines in the news, around the same time a new Latin sound called Afro Cuban was hitting the pop charts with the Miami Sound Machine's hit Conga. Hand drumming was receiving a great amount of press as more people began to take up hand drumming as a recreational hobby. People wanted to drum for a variety of health and wellness reasons, along with pure enjoyment. All the while, the Latin sound became more popular and mainstream.
At this time, there was only one dominant brand in the percussion/hand drum market manufacturing hand drum instruments. Kaman Music decided to introduce Toca Percussion as an alternative choice in hand percussion instruments and accessories. Toca was designed and developed to have a different look and provide the Afro Cuban sound. This made Toca different from the dominant brand thus giving new players and percussionists an alternative choice when looking for hand percussion instruments.
Toca Exclusive Features
To achieve this new sound, design, and style, Toca introduced several exclusive features.
FOUR-BOLT TENSION PLATE
this spreads the high tuning tension over a larger space of the shell allowing Toca drums the ability to stand up to high tuning ranges.
SHELL DESIGN
the Afro Cuban designed shell features a sharp taper at the lower portion of the conga's bowl, creating extremely strong bass tones, fundamental to the Afro Cuban sound.
EASYPLAY HOOP
Toca's exclusive hoop design that not only protects the player's hands from the hoop edges, but is the only hoop that enhances the sound of a drum by stretching the head away from the drums bearing edge to create extra resonance in the drum.
3-YEAR WARRANTY
Toca branded drums and accessories carry a 3-year warranty to the original owner.
All Toca wood drums have two-ply stave shells for added durability and are finished in many vibrant color options. Toca Percussion also offers players and drum enthusiasts a wide variety of percussion instruments and accessories that are designed and tested by players.
Toca's commitment to the Afro Cuban sound, out of the box thinking, product development, and educational programs are just a few reasons that Toca has grown in popularity over the years. Today, Toca is proud to be a leading brand in the hand drum and percussion marketplace, and is committed to always offering the player a choice in style, design, and sound.
