Looking for a longer-scale guitar that can play lower and offers a variety of different low tunings that go beyond the standard configuration? A baritone guitar is the way to go! Available in acoustic and electric varieties, these instruments are used in numerous genres of music and are ready to bridge the gap between the bass and the standard guitar range.
So, what are the differences between a standard guitar and a baritone guitar? The first is the difference in scale length - the distance between the nut and the bridge. Most standard guitars are around 25 inches, give or take a little bit depending on the make and model. Baritone guitars are in the 27-30 inch range and they usually have a slightly bigger body and extra bracing to handle this longer scale length and heavier string tension. A longer scale length also affects the overall feel of the instrument - the distance between the frets is also going to be longer, and the increased tension means you’ll have to experiment with different string gauges to find the right feel. Our guitar specialists are always here to help you get the most out of your Baritone guitar, so get in touch with us if you have any questions.
The next is the use of different tunings. The standard guitar tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E, but with a baritone guitar you can also comfortably drop down into a variety of lower tunings. Baritone Guitar Tuning often employs B-E-A-D-F#-B (a fourth lower than standard), B-E-A-D-G-B (similar, but substituting ‘G’ so that it’s like a five-string bass), and A-D-G-C-E-A (a fifth lower than standard). These tunings let you explore a wider range of sounds, which leads us to our next important difference…
Versatility is the big calling card of a baritone guitar. With one of these instruments in hand, you can change responsibilities on the fly – playing lead guitar lines, tackling a wide variety of chords, doubling melodies down an octave, and playing basslines are all open to you, and will sound great! The tonal color of a baritone guitar is deep, resonant, and rich – you’ll be able to bring some full lows and rich lower-middle frequencies to the overall musical texture!
