VOX AD50VTXL Valvetronix XL Hi Gain Guitar Combo AmplifierThe AD50VT2-XL is part of the VOX Valvetronix XL line. This exciting new series of tube-powered modelling amplifiers deliver the power and punch that modern rock players require. These amps feature a selection of hi-gain sounds that span the entire range of heavy rock music.
Features of the AD50VT2-XL include:
Sophisticated modelling technology is used to provide eleven different amps, including classic vintage amps of the past, costly, modern high-end amps and high-gain hybrids, all accessible at the turn of a knob. These new models include:
- Glass- modeled on the Clean channel of a collectable 100-Watt head named the Overdrive Special;
- Funked- modeled on a classic American black-faced 2x12 combo;
- Buzzsaw- inspired by the British-made 50-Watt head that created the sounds of ‘70s hard rock and metal;
- Crunched- based on a very rare modded VOX AC30/6TBX Top Boost combo, adding new hot-rodded gain levels and EQ;
- Thrashed- modelled on a 1983, all tube, single channel, master volume 100-Watt head;
- Raged- based on the high gain channel of a modern, all-tube 100 Watter, with boosted bass and mid frequencies and even more gain;
- Modern- a still higher gain modification to the “Modern High Gain” channel, with scooped EQ;
- Fluid- the UK Modern setting with maximum gain and mid-range EQ, modified to emphasize a vocal-like tone for legato-style playing;
- Molten- based on VOX’s US Hi-Gain model but capable of even more powerful, heavily saturated sounds, with an Octave effect mixed into the preset;
- Black- a version of the UK Modern mutated to Class A, rather than Class AB;
- Damaged- rooted in VOX’s US Hi-Gain model with more gain and a completely re-voiced and modified EQ to be thicker and darker.
Eleven high-quality effects are built in, including compressor, delay, reverb, compressor & chorus, compressor & phaser, chorus & delay, chorus & reverb, flanger & reverb, tremolo & reverb, and rotary & reverb, plus Noise Reduction. New for the XL series is an Octave effect for massive lead tones. Effect parameters are fully adjustable and a Tap button makes it easy to set your delay time or modulation speed.
Store your favourite amp and effect settings as a program, containing two different settings (CH1 and CH2). Switch between these settings from the top panel, or by using the optional VFS2 foot switch connected to the rear panel. In addition, there is a preset program for each amp type.
In Manual mode the sound you hear reflects the physical settings of the knobs.
You’re in control. Connect an optional VFS2 dual foot switch (sold separately) to switch programs or bypass effects. A power level control (not available on AD15VT-XL) adjusts the output wattage of the power amp. This means that even when the master volume is turned up all the way to drive the Valve Reactor power amp, you can adjust the volume without losing any tone.

|      | | Subject: | Great Hi-Gain Amp - A metal players dream! | | Quality:
| Came well packed, certainly feels solid and well built. Quite heavy - I think the shipping weight was 50lbs - a pound per watt. I feels tough and looks tough - very very black, from the covering, the grill, to the speakers. I think this amp could handle the rigors of gigging pretty well. | | Reliability:
| I just received it a few days ago so no opinion on this one yet - so far so good. I have read about some issues with the input jacks and oxidization. The fix is to simply spray electronic switch cleaner in the jacks every once in a while to keep them clean and working well. | | Overall:
| Overall this is a great amp - definitely for those metal players out there (I'm one myself) - it is the dark side of VOX amplification. I've seen some people stating that the presets don't all sound great for them (for me they all sounded good), but that's to be expected since not all guitars or players are the same; put it in bypass mode and make your own tones, dialed in for your playing styles and equipment - each knob really does effect the outcome. One little negative is the ability to only store two personal presets - it needs more. | | Playability and Feel:
| The preset tones are what I expected from the Guitar World video review that got me interested in this amp - it is a hi-gain monster. I love the ability to crank up the volume (50 watts is very loud on this amp) but dial down the power setting to play with all the growl and bite of a fully opened up amp at lower volumes. If you want loud as hell you have it - if you need lesser volume without sacrificing the gain it's readily | | Tone:
| With eleven amp models ranging from beautiful cleans, tight chunky rhythms, and screaming leads, it's all at your hands if you want to experiment and dial in your tone. Each knob in manual mode really has an effect on each amp - read the manual so you understand the technology and the impact of each knob, and don't forget the controls on your guitar - volume and tone play an important role in dialing in what you want. Add to that the great onboard effects which all seem to be of very good quality and you can really get funky with your sound. I like to dial in a great amp tone with effects in bypass mode, then add some effects on top once my tone is what I'm looking for. Once again - read the manual so you understand how to edit the effects including noise suppression. While tailored to the many genres of metal, you can get great tones for pretty much any style of music. | | Finish:
| It looks evil - hehehe Black, and then some more black. the finish is of a very high quality. Black tolex covering, flat black metal grill, and all black speakers make it the dark lord of VOX. A closed back amp for all the thump I love. I like the amp controls up on top of the amp leaving the front to be simply a mean black surface. It has the input jack up on top with the controls, a 8 ohm speaker out on the rear that unfortunately disables the internal speakers (it would be nice to add a 4x12 and not have to forgo the internal 2x12 cabinet. You also get a line out/phone jack that allows you to route the preamp signal with cabinet modeling to a mixer or PC interface, or head phones for quiet playing. | | Action:

QUALITY: Quality is good, seems built like a rock. heavy and sturdy. but i have heard many stories of VOX's reliability down in the pits. AS of experience, so far so good.
FEATURES: Tons of effects and amp models, its possible to get a huge diversity of tones. Pretty good presets too. I'd reccomend getting the VOX footswitch as well.
EASE OF USE: At first its a pain trying to dial your tone and figure what everything is/does/and reperesents because of the bizarre names they labeled for the amp models. You really have to tweak the effects to to get them how you like them.
VALUE: I was hoping not to spend this much considering im a college student making minimum wage, and it took a week or 2 of questioning my purchase. But now after 2 months i have zero regrets in choosing this amp. You get what you pay for, The only thing better would be the next step in going all out for a $2500 marshall stack.

| Sounds better than any modeling amp within several hundred in price. Line 6 was the other brand I was looking at. The VOX tube sound is immeasurably better than the harsh solid state sound of the Line 6's. Nice selection of sampled amps and effects, too. | | Finish:
