Unbelievable Value in a 5 String Bass
General
What is your overall opinion of this product?
This bass exceeded my expectations by far! The Looks, feel, sound and quality are excellent.
Quality
What is your opinion of the quality of this product? How does it work for different genres of music?
The body has a beautiful 3 color sunburst with some flame in the grain, no flaws. The neck has flamed maple throughout and is has the curved veneer style fingerboard like the early 60's fender basses rather than the later slab fingerboards. The truss rod is installed from the rear with a rosewood skunk stripe and adjusts easily. The frets are flawless, even and level. This bass is at home in any style of music.
Features
Are the features on the product what you were expecting? What are your favorite features?
I own a us american standard p 5 that I love. I wanted to add a jazz pickup to it but, the cost of the pickup, labor to rout the body and install it is far more costly than the $249.00 I paid for this bass. The neck on this bass feels nearly identical to my USA am std p 5. The USA p 5 has rounded edges on the fingerboard making it feel more broken in but other than that they are virtually identical.
Feel
Heavy, fast, chunky? How was the neck? Are the controls easy to get to while playing?
Thin and fast! No dead spots and all notes are very even all over the entire neck. The bass is a bit heavier than I prefer, but it also contributes to its excellent tone and sustain. I play seated most of the time so it's not a deal breaker.
Tone
How is the tone? Bright and snappy? Dark and smooth? Were the pickups hot, mellow, thick or thin?
You can get the full range of P and J sounds. The active bass boost is excellent and adds a lot of muscle to the tone. Quiet electronics, no noise.
Finish
How did the stain or paint job look?
The body is flawless, the neck however felt a bit rough to the touch. I buffed it out thoroughly with a green scotch brite pad and then waxed it. It's as smooth as silk now and looks great. I treated the rosewood fingerboard with orange oil and it soaked right in to rehydrate it.
Value
Did you get what you were expecting for the price? How does it compare to similar products in the same price range?
Probably the best value for a versatile 5 string bass on the market today. I've played basses costing $1000.00 that were not even close to the sound and quality of this bass.
Playability
How was the action out of the box?
Like all basses shipped from abroad they need setup. I immediately replaced the strings with my preferred extra light d'adarrio flex steels. The bass neck adjusted easily, bridge height and intonation set perfect. The critical nut height is correct and does not need any further work.
