Korg D3200 Digital Multitrack Recorder

The Korg D3200 is a First-Class Recording Studio.

Korg's renowned D-series of digital recording studios welcomes the new D3200 Digital Recording Studio. The D3200 is the first in its class to provide up to 32 tracks of simultaneous playback and up to 12 tracks of simultaneous recording (using 12 balanced quarter-inch inputs – 8 are also equipped with XLR) to support high channel-count projects – such as recording a live band.

The D3200 lets you record up to 272 tracks (including 8 virtual tracks per track), all with sophisticated digital editing functionality. The powerful mixer section includes 40 input channels plus a great set of high-quality effects that employ KORG's renowned REMS modeling technology. KORG's completely new and interactive Session Drums allow you to easily create a realistic and natural drum track for your entire song, simply by tweaking a few knobs. Packing powerful studio functionality into a portable package, the intuitive D3200 is the ideal choice when you need to create sophisticated, high-quality recordings.

Korg D3200 Features
  • The first 32-track digital recording studio designed to deliver professional quality at an affordable price.
  • Exclusive Session Drums feature works in conjunction with our Knob Matrix, allowing you to intuitively create realistic drum tracks.
  • The recorder engine features uncompressed 24- or 16-bit recording / playback at 48 or 44.1 kHz, with up to 69-bit internal processing.
  • Record up to 272 tracks (including 8 virtual tracks per track), all with sophisticated digital editing functionality.
  • Record up to twelve tracks at once, using 12 balanced 1/4” inputs – 8 are also equipped with XLR inputs and individual phantom power. A convenient guitar input jack is also provided for guitarists.
  • The powerful, flexible 12 bus, 44-channel mixer offers a four-band EQ on channel 1 through 24, and a master four-band EQ as well.
  • Automated mixing lets you record and play back fader, pan and other mixer events. In addition, 100 scene memories provide more detailed automation. Mixer parameters may also be controlled via MIDI.
  • The Knob Matrix, ClickPoint, and cursor keys provide quick and intuitive operation. The high-resolution 320 x 240 pixel tilt-up LCD uses four-level grayscale shading and backlit illumination for enhanced visibility, providing a clear and easily understandable display.
  • A total of eleven high-quality effects can be used simultaneously as inserts, master, and final effects, and are easily controlled via the Knob Matrix.
  • High-capacity 80 GB internal hard drive
  • Built-in CD-RW, Master Track and Album CD Project features allow you to produce a production-ready CD with ease.
  • USB 2.0 connectivity allows a smooth exchange of data with your computer-based DAW software. Use the PC drive partition on the internal hard disk to share data with your computer.
Professional quality sound at an affordable price
The new D3200 provides 16 and 24-bit uncompressed 44.1 or 48 kHz recording and playback. Up to 32 tracks of simultaneous playback and up to 16 tracks of simultaneous recording*1 are possible. By taking advantage of the eight virtual tracks provided for each track, you can record a total of up to 272*2 tracks. In the 24-bit mode, the digital data passing through the fader and EQ is recorded onto the internal hard drive as 32-bit data, ensuring even higher recording and playback quality. A 80 GB hard disk is standard, allowing approximately 119 hours* of recording. The internal processor uses 64-bit precision (maximum 69 bit), delivering professional-level audio quality.

With Korg's new interactive Session Drums, your own studio drummer is always available
Create dynamic drum tracks quickly and easily with the D3200's totally new, built-in Session Drums feature. Using KORG’s exclusive Knob Matrix, simply twist the Group and Session knobs to choose the overall musical style, and use the Variation knob to select a pattern appropriate for your song. Breathe new life into your drum tracks by tweaking the Shuffle and Humanize knobs to produce subtle variations in the timing, accent, feel and volume of each drum hit. You can even customize the rhythm sounds themselves. With Session Drums, you can create and record your original drum tracks – without time-consuming programming and step-recording.

Sophisticated and versatile track editing tools
With a comprehensive suite of editing functions, you can perform advanced and non-destructive track editing without impairing the high-quality sound. In addition to auto and manual punch-in/out, the D3200 provides editing functions such as copy, erase, reverse, normalize and fade. Sophisticated editing functions such as time expansion/compression are also supported. In addition, a learning noise reduction feature removes unwanted ambient noise without impairing the original sound, further improving the quality of your sound. Undo/Redo allows up to sixteen prior recording and editing operations to be undone, letting you continue editing until you are satisfied. Four locate points allow pinpoint editing of your song.

Versatile input section to accommodate nearly any recording situation – including live situations
The D3200 can record up to twelve tracks at once, and there are plenty of inputs to go around. An even dozen of 1/4” balanced inputs are teamed with eight XLR inputs jacks featuring high-quality mic preamps and +48V phantom power. Each of the eight phantom power supplies can be switched on/off independently, so you can mix and match your favorite condenser and dynamic mics to get the job done. At home in the digital world, the D3200 also features optical S/P DIF ins and outs. For those private moments of inspiration, there's also a dedicated guitar jack so you can start recording immediately with a minimum of preparation. The large number of simultaneous recording tracks and the D3200’s wealth of inputs make it easy to record entire bands or even individually-mic’d drum sets.

Powerful automated mixer section provides professional features and flexibility
The D3200's mixer provides a total of 44 input channels (32 recorder channels and 12 sub-mixer channels). Recorder channels 1-24 are equipped with a versatile four-band EQ. Channels 25-32 provide a two-band shelving EQ, as does each of the 12 sub-mixer channels. For complete control of your sound, the master track features a separate four-band fully parametric EQ. Recording input channels and track playback channels feature separate EQs, so there’s no danger of applying duplicate EQ settings, as on some lesser recorders. This professional recording mixer offers a total of twelve buses (including two effect sends), giving you the flexibility to meet the needs of a wide range of situations. Fader, EQ, pan, and effect settings can be stored as a scene, and up to 100 scenes can be saved and automatically recalled for each song, providing sophisticated automation. In addition, Dynamic Automation records and plays back individual fader and pan movements in real time, providing the freedom you need for creative mixing. Mixer parameters can also be controlled via MIDI.

An enhanced graphic display teamed with an all-new interface provides fast, intuitive navigation
As the new standard for affordable digital recording studios, the D3200 brings ease of operation to a new level, with a full complement of fresh innovations such as the unique Knob Matrix and Korg’s exclusive ClickPoint. The Knob Matrix provides 16 real-time control knobs laid out in a 4 x 4 arrangement that can be used simultaneously to edit a variety of parameters such as the Session Drums or the effect processors. It’s an extremely analog-feeling interface that’s far more natural than accessing a parameter and editing its numerical value. The 3-axis ClickPoint provides fingertip control that is much more immediate and satisfying than using a mouse or a track ball. ClickPoint can also be used as a jog/shuttle function when you're scrubbing through audio. The cursor keys and other panel keys efficiently access numerous shortcuts for the various modes. The 320 x 240 pixel four-level grayscale display uses immediately understandable icons and provides visual feedback of the many Knob Matrix functions.

High-quality effects deliver professional sounding results
The D3200’s multiple effect processors use 56-bit internal processing to provide the highest audio quality, and include many of the acclaimed “REMS” technology modeling effects. A total of eleven effects can be used at once; eight insert effects, two master effects applied to the master sends of each channel, and two final effects applied to the master L/R. You can instantly select from 128 effect programs created from 52 different effect algorithms. You can edit, create and store your own effect programs in the 128 user locations shared by the entire D3200, or in the 32 user effect program locations for each song.

Album CD Project and internal CD-RW takes your musical ideas to completion
The D3200's built-in CD-RW drive can be used to backup/restore songs and user data, to import WAV files, or to create finished audio CDs. When creating an audio CD, you can use the Album CD Project function to easily create a production-ready CD that specifies the song order and even the length of the gaps between songs. The internal hard drive can be partitioned so you can work on multiple album CD projects at once. The CD-RW can also be internally routed to the mixer inputs and used as a CD player.

Computer friendly
The D3200 automatically allocates part of its internal hard disk as a PC (USB) drive.*4 This area can be used to import/export WAV data between the D3200 and a computer DAW program via USB, and can also be used to load system data. D3200 user data transferred to your PC can be easily e-mailed or exchanged over the Internet. High-speed USB 2.0 is supported, so even large amounts of data can be transferred smoothly. In addition, back-up data created*5 by other Korg D-series models can also be loaded.*6 (D12, D16, D1200, D1600, D1200mkII, D1600mkII, D16XD, D32XD)

*1 When recording at 16-bit 44.1/48 kHz. A maximum of 16 tracks can be recorded simultaneously using 12 analog inputs, S/P DIF inputs and the outputs from Session Drums™. When using 24-bit 44.1/48 kHz recording, a maximum of 16 tracks can be played back and a maximum of 12 tracks can be recorded simultaneously.
*2 Thirty-two tracks plus a stereo master track for mixdown (all with 8 virtual tracks per) are provided.
*3 16-bit, one track.
*4 FAT32 is supported – 2, 4 or 8 GB partitions are possible.
*5 Song data backed up to a CD (D12, D16, D1200, D1600, D1200mkII, D1600mkII, D32XD, D16XD) or to a PC (D1200, D1600, D1200mkII, D1600mkII, D32XD, D16XD).
*6 The following data can be loaded: audio data, song name, song protect setting, locate points (1--4), and marks (1--99). When backed-up song data is loaded into the PC drive, the song protect setting is ignored.

Very nice metal constrction. Should Last a long time. Takes a little time to boot up but works great. Knobs and sliders are ok. The screen really needs improving. Would be nice if it had VGA outs like the Roland VS series. USB 2.0 file transfres are pretty fast.

FEATURES:
The recording quality is fantastic and should be good enough for most projects. Virtual tracks gives you more tracks then you'll ever need. The onboard effects are just OK but thats not what I bought it for. Session drums are better than I thought thry would be but don't think it's a replacement for a real drummer.

EASE OF USE:
READ THE MANUAL! After reading the manual you will find the board layout to be quite logical. the advanced editing functions are great but reading the little display will give you a headache.

I had a problem with the headphone volume pot but returned and fine now. A sturdy, heavy unit that looks beautiful in my home studio with 80's gear including vintage synth, whch all match- black and cherry woods. Photos do not do justice. Excellent finish. Far superior to the little silver boxes. Good solid feel to all sliders and knobs. Good ports.

FEATURES:
I agree with previous review about effects. I started with Roland CDX-1 and the effects here are much lighter and need tweaking. At first I was put off by the screen but am completely used to it. As noted in Electronic Musician review, it would have been nice to have another headphone out (only one) but then again how much would that be used? I can run more out of the monitor. EM did not like the mouse type control but I am used to this from my computer and find it great. There are multiple ways to manipulate functions which is really helpful. I love the knob matrix.

QUALITY:
The d3200 is extremely well built. The wood side panels make it look comfortable in a home studio or out on the road. Compared to other digital "studio in a box" machines, the d3200 is by far superior in terms of mechanical design.

FEATURES:
32 tracks is nice, but after 16 who really cares? The session drums are a nice touch but are extremely limited. Think of Session Drums as a metronome on steroids. The effects are great but the presets for the effects are terrible. To get a good reverb, you'll need to change the parameters for HEQ and reflection drastically... or they'll sound like a spring. Once you tweak them, they are close to good Yamaha or TC reverb in quality. The Special FX and dynamics are crystal clear and very musical. The delays are OK in general, but the double tap delay is superior. Over effects get a 4 out of 5.
