In 1970, a Boeing worker in Mukilteo, Washington named Greg Mackie decided he was tired of the underpowered mixers that dominated the live music landscape — especially as hard rock was gaining momentum! During perhaps a bit of an ego trip, he decided he could design a better mixer and came out with the TAPCO Model 6000. It was the first six-channel mixer designed specifically for rock and roll.
Greg admittedly called his first mixer “primitive,” but their low price and bulletproof design made them quite popular with the Washington rock and roll scene. Even from the beginning, Mackie made sure his products had that durable “Built-Like-a-Tank” construction! The goal wasn’t just to make gear; it was to make gear that lasts.
Greg Mackie worked with TAPCO through the ‘70s and most of the ‘80s. But in 1989, he decided to go off on his own and founded a company that finally featured his name on the door. Of course, that door was his three-bedroom condo, but it was a door nonetheless!
The first official product from Mackie Designs was the LM-1602 line mixer. It wasn’t necessarily a huge seller, but it was a great start for the company. Soon, Mackie moved into a warehouse space and released the follow-up CR-1604 mixer. This one blew up and really put Mackie on the map!
By 1993, Mackie had over 250 employees and greatly expanded their product offerings. They started producing everything from mixers (of course) to monitors and loudspeakers for all sorts of applications.
By the mid-90s Mackie was a household name in the music industry. According to Mackie’s website, “you couldn’t swing a knotted-up mic cable without hitting a pair of Mackie SRM450 loudspeakers.” In 1995, they sold their 100,000th mixer!
As the ‘90s came to a close, Mackie leaned into the marketing side of the business. Greg hired a team of writers and marketing experts to create not only clever user manuals that were fun to read but also a monthly magazine called In Your Face. Mackie’s marketing became stuff of legend — and their no-nonsense style is still apparent in their ads and product descriptions today.
Throughout the 2000s and beyond, Mackie has continued to release innovative products designed for recording and live sound applications. If you work in a creative field, especially if it’s related to music or audio production, there’s a Mackie product for you!
