History of RODE

Officially, the RODE story begins way back in 1967 with another company called Freedman Electronics. Swedish immigrants Henry and Astrid Freedman moved to Australia and opened an electronics company that specialized in amplifiers, loudspeakers, and custom electronics — while dabbling in the odd microphone here and there. Business quickly boomed, as they were one of the only electronics companies in the country that carried Dynacord consoles. In fact, Henry Freedman even mixed Tom Jones with a Dynacord console during his 1968 Australian tour!

While Freedman Electronics took hold of the Australian electronics market, it wasn’t until 1990 that RODE came about. Around that time, home studios were gaining a lot of steam, and the Freedmans saw an opportunity to jump in headfirst with a line of affordable large-diaphragm condenser microphones.

Henry and Astrid’s son, Peter Freedman, started working on the infrastructure to design, build, and manufacture microphones in house at their Australia location. It wasn’t long before RODE was born!

The first product manufactured from start to finish was the NT1 condenser microphone. It quickly became one of the best-selling microphones of all time and has since reached legendary status among audio engineers. RODE quickly followed up with the NT2, which was another success, launching the company to the next level.

Over the next decade, RODE went on to completely dominate the studio industry. Their valve Classic and NTK microphones could be found in studios all over the world, and their broadcasting mics became industry standard. People just couldn’t get enough. RODE found the perfect balance between quality and affordability.

In 2001, RODE opened their first U.S. operation. They invested heavily in technology to ensure they could maintain the incredible in-house manufacturing quality they became known for over the past decade while simultaneously expanding their reach.

By 2004, handheld DSLR cameras were getting so good that they could record cinema-level quality, and content creators wanted to take advantage of that. But they needed amazing audio to compliment the amazing video.

RODE heard the cries of content creators everywhere and developed the first VideoMic on-camera shotgun microphone. The VideoMic was a major hit and helped fuel the YouTube and vlogging sensation that continues to this day!

Ever since, RODE has continued to diversify their product lines and stay ahead of the trends. Their camera and podcasting microphones are used by amateurs and industry professionals alike, while their mixers and accessories can be found in studios all over the world. There’s a reason RODE is considered “The Choice of Today’s Creative Generation.” If you want to create, RODE audio equipment is ready to help!
