History of PreSonus

It was 1995. A Berklee-trained guitarist/audio engineer named Jim Odom began working with a manufacturing expert named Brian Smith. The goal was to create innovative studio equipment that provides professional sound quality without sacrificing affordability. And out of that collaboration, PreSonus was born!

The first PreSonus product was the DCP8: a digitally controlled eight-channel analog compressor/limiter/gate. Its secret weapon was its MIDI control over the analog circuitry — which earned PreSonus its first patent! This digital/analog technology is actually still used in PreSonus studio equipment.

One year later, PreSonus created the ACP8, which was the first-ever multi-channel compressor with onboard bus link. That finally meant that musicians could link up to all eight channels at once! Needless to say, PreSonus hit the ground running with their innovative musical gear.

Through the rest of the ‘90s, PreSonus continued with their amazing compressors and preamps, but in 2000, they entered the Audio Interface Revolution.

According to legend, the Senior VP of Global Sales for PreSonus noticed that most of the top audio interfaces of the time had ADAT inputs that users connected to ADAT machines to transfer their audio to a computer, but they didn’t have many mic preamps, making it difficult to record full bands — especially if the band had a drum kit!

Based on these observations, it wasn’t long before PreSonus released the DigiMax, which was an eight-channel mic preamp with limiting and A/D conversion straight to ADAT. This integration changed the game for home studios. You could now achieve the same end goal with fewer components — an idea which PreSonus ran with for years to come.

In 2002, PreSonus released their first audio interface. Keeping with their integrated approach to audio equipment, the FIREStation and the FirePod were both designed to work via FireWire for super-fast and reliable interactions between the interface and software.

At the same time, PreSonus engineer, Robert Creel, completed his amazing XMAX preamp design. As if PreSonus wasn’t already famous for their incredible preamps, the XMAX changed the game yet again. They’re so good, in fact, XMAX preamps are still used in PreSonus studio equipment today!

Over time the technology kept getting better and the PreSonus integrations kept coming. In 2008 they released their very first digital mixer that featured a complete one-to-one workflow that worked seamlessly using FireWire.

In 2009, PreSonus finally decided to launch their very own digital audio workstation (DAW): Studio One. And with their fancy new DAW came a bunch of fancy new integrations. New PreSonus studio equipment was designed to work seamlessly with Studio One to make recording, mixing, and producing even easier.

PreSonus continued to work with various other developers in the coming years, and even acquired a few of them, to create their line of incredible music equipment. But what good is all that software and mixing gear if you can’t hear it? In 2014, PreSonus introduced their very own line of studio monitors. They also released the StudioLive AI series of loudspeakers for live sound applications.

Today, PreSonus studio equipment can be found in home studios and professional setups all over the world. Their ever-popular DAW, Studio One, is now in its sixth generation with even more integrations and features than ever before. If you’re looking to create a seamless workflow with top-of-the-line equipment in your studio, PreSonus has the products for you!
