At American Musical Supply, we carry the full Evans lineup, from single-ply G1 heads to the oil-filled Hydraulic series and the adjustable EMAD bass drum system. Whatever your kit needs, we have the Evans drum heads to match.

Evans Level 360 Technology

One of the biggest frustrations drummers face is seating a new head evenly on the bearing edge. Evans addresses this with Level 360 Technology, a collar design that extends the playing surface evenly around the full circumference of the drum. The head sits flat and makes consistent contact from the moment you place it on the shell. The result is easier tuning, a wider usable pitch range, and fewer dead spots caused by uneven tension. If you’ve ever wrestled with a head that just wouldn’t sit right, Level 360 is a noticeable improvement.

Popular Evans Drum Head Series

Evans organizes their drum heads into distinct series, each designed around a specific tonal goal. Understanding what each series does makes it much easier to pick the right head for each drum in your kit.

The G1 series uses a single ply of 10mil film for a bright, open sound with plenty of sustain. It works well on snares and toms where sensitivity and dynamics are the priority. The G2 series steps up to two plies of 7mil film, adding durability and a fuller tone with controlled sustain. G2 heads are some of the most popular drum heads on the market for good reason.

The Hydraulic series takes a different approach entirely. A thin layer of oil sits between two plies, naturally muffling overtones and shortening sustain without external dampening. The result is a fat, punchy sound that works especially well for rock and heavier styles. The EC2 series uses Sound Shaping Technology (SST), an Edge Control ring mounted on the underside that varies in size by head diameter, delivering a balanced, pre-EQ'd response across the full kit.

For bass drums, the EMAD system gives you externally mounted adjustable damping that lets you swap between foam rings to change attack and sustain without ever removing the head. It is one of the most practical bass drum head designs available.

Single-Ply vs. Two-Ply Evans Heads

The choice comes down to how you play. Single-ply heads like the G1 are more resonant and sensitive to a lighter touch, picking up ghost notes and brush work easily. Two-ply heads like the G2, EC2, and Hydraulic handle harder hitting with more durability and a focused, controlled tone. Both are available in clear and coated finishes. Coated adds warmth and works well with brushes; clear is brighter and more articulate. For tips on getting the most out of any head, check out our guide on how to tune drums.

Frequently Asked Questions About Evans Drum Heads

Can I use Evans heads on any brand of drum?

Yes. Evans drum heads are designed to fit standard drum sizes from any manufacturer. Level 360 Technology helps them seat evenly regardless of the shell brand.

How long do Evans drum heads last?

It depends on how often and how hard you play. Two-ply heads like the G2 and Hydraulic series last longer under heavy use, while single-ply heads like the G1 may need to be replaced sooner if you hit hard regularly.

What's the difference between coated and clear Evans heads?

Coated heads add warmth and a slightly darker tone, and they work well with brushes. Clear heads are brighter and more articulate, which makes them popular for toms and live settings where projection matters.
