Ned Steinberger's original mission was to remove everything from the guitar that wasn't essential. What he came up with in the early 1980s was a guitar with no headstock and no conventional wood body, built from composite materials with a tone that surprised players who judged it by appearance. Steinberger guitars became favorites among touring pros who needed reliability in a compact form factor. Now part of the Gibson family, the designs are still in production.
