In 1954, Gibson introduced the Les Paul Custom, the higher-priced alternative to the inaugural Les Paul ‘Goldtop’ which had been released two years earlier. Dubbed the ‘Black Beauty,’ the Gibson Les Paul Custom’s deep gloss black finish and bright gold hardware made it a visual stunner that caught your eye immediately. They embodied excellence and the highest levels of detail – a solid mahogany body, sharp body binding, and mother-of-pearl inlay both on the fingerboard (block inlay) and the headstock (showcasing the Gibson logo and ‘split-diamond’ graphic). Simply put, this instrument was guitar equivalent of an elegant black-tie event.

The Les Paul Custom also had the distinction of having a Tune-O-Matic bridge and a P-90/Alnico 5 pickup combination that upped the output and dared to be different - paving the way toward the future creation of those iconic Gibson PAF humbuckers. In the years that passed, Gibson added more models to the fold, but the Les Paul Custom remained the high-flyer in the lineup.
