The HalfLife is a compact octave distortion and booster pedal developed in collaboration between EarthQuaker Devices and Sunn O))). It's a smaller, pedalboard-friendly version of the legendary Life Pedal distortion circuit, featuring three clipping options, an all-discrete analog octave circuit, and an independent clean boost.
The three clipping modes are OpAmp (no diodes, maximum grinding gain), Asymmetrical (two silicon diodes + one LED for smooth, valve-like crunch), and Symmetrical (the classic double silicon diode configuration). Each mode delivers a noticeably different character, making the pedal adaptable to a wide range of rigs and playing styles.
The HalfLife uses an all-discrete analog full-wave rectifier circuit to generate the octave effect. It works best with single notes played above the 12th fret using the neck pickup. For the most dramatic effect, the Octave control can also be assigned to an expression pedal for hands-free octave blending during performance.
Yes, both the octave distortion and the booster have their own dedicated footswitches and can be used independently or simultaneously. The right footswitch activates the octave distortion; the left footswitch activates the boost.
Flexi-Switch is EarthQuaker Devices' relay-based true bypass switching system that supports both latching and momentary operation from the same footswitch. Tap once to latch the effect on; hold the switch for momentary use that bypasses automatically when released. Note that because the switching is relay-based, the pedal requires power to pass signal.
