EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion Pedal

The original Life Pedal is a certified legend — a sonic beast that has graced the pedalboards of drone metal royalty. Only thing was it basically required its own zip code. Enter the HalfLife.

EarthQuaker Devices and Sunn O))) shrunk the monster, delivering the same world-crushing distortion in a pedalboard-friendly footprint. At half the size but with all the original's devastating power, this Octave Distortion and Booster combo will make your guitar sound like a collapsing star — while still leaving room on your board for a tuner.

EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Distortion That Goes All the Way

Distortion That Goes All the Way to "Are You Serious?"

The "Amplitude" side of the HalfLife is a faithful recreation of the iconic "White Face" distortion circuit — the very same circuit that has been rattling ribcages and terrorizing neighbors since the drone metal dark ages. But EarthQuaker didn't just copy-paste history. They handed it a clipping switch with three settings, because one flavor of apocalyptic gain was simply not enough.

    • OpAmp Clipping: No diodes. No compression. No mercy. This is raw, grinding Op Amp assault at full volume — the sonic equivalent of staring directly into the sun and daring it to blink first.
    • Asymmetrical Clipping: Two silicon diodes and one LED walk into a bar. The result is a smooth, slightly compressed crunch that feels like a vintage valve amp — warm, organic, and still very capable of ruining your hearing.
    • Symmetrical Clipping: The stock double silicon diode configuration. The classic. The one that started it all. If it ain't broke, don't fix it — just turn the distortion knob up and pretend you fixed it anyway.

An Octave Effect That Actually Delivers

The octave circuit in the HalfLife isn't a digital afterthought — it's an all-discrete analog full-wave rectifier sitting right at the input of the signal path. Blend it in gently for a subtle harmonic shimmer or crank it all the way up and watch your distortion pedal transform into something that sounds dangerously close to a classic Super Fuzz. Wild, unpredictable, and utterly addictive.

    • Analog Full-Wave Rectifier: Positioned at the very front of the signal chain, this discrete octave circuit adds a layer of harmonic complexity that digital emulations simply cannot replicate. Play single notes above the 12th fret on the neck pickup for the cleanest, most focused effect.
    • Expression Pedal Control: Plug an expression pedal into the Octave EXP input and control the octave blend hands-free. Because nothing keeps an audience on their toes quite like a mid-riff octave swell they didn't see coming.
    • Full Octave Mode: Crank the Octave control all the way clockwise and the HalfLife sheds its distortion pedal identity entirely, transforming into a swelling, raging fuzz machine with a spiritual nod to the Super Fuzz. Chords turn "clanging and chaotic" — EarthQuaker's words, not ours. Though honestly, that's kind of the whole point.

EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Two Pedals, One Box

Two Pedals, One Box, Zero Regrets

The HalfLife doesn't just stop at distortion. There's a dedicated booster circuit baked right in, with its own footswitch, its own output volume control (cheekily labeled "Magnitude"), and enough clean gain to push your amp into orbit. The signal flows in a logical Octave > Distortion > Boost path, and each section can be used independently or together — giving you serious tonal flexibility in a surprisingly compact enclosure.

    • Independent Footswitches: The right footswitch controls the Octave Distortion; the left controls the Boost. Use them separately, stack them together, or stomp both at once and apologize to your bandmates later.
    • Flexi-Switch Technology: EarthQuaker's relay-based true bypass switching supports both latching and momentary operation. Tap once to latch the effect on. Hold the switch for momentary use. Release and return to bypass. It's smarter than it looks — which, admittedly, is already pretty smart.
    • Lifetime Warranty: Designed and built by hand in Akron, Ohio, the HalfLife is backed by EarthQuaker Devices' lifetime warranty. Because a pedal this heavy should stick around for a very long time.

    Smaller Footprint. Same Seismic Quake.

The EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion Pedal is the rare piece of gear that shrinks in size without shrinking in ambition. It carries the full weight of the Life Pedal legacy, adds genuine versatility with three clipping modes and an expression-controllable analog octave, and wraps it all in a pedalboard-friendly enclosure that won't require a structural assessment of your board.

Whether you're chasing glacial drone, thunderous fuzz, or just want a distortion pedal that will outlast civilizations, the HalfLife delivers. Vintage valve amplifiers recommended. Ear protection also recommended.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The HalfLife is a compact octave distortion and booster pedal developed in collaboration between EarthQuaker Devices and Sunn O))). It's a smaller, pedalboard-friendly version of the legendary Life Pedal distortion circuit, featuring three clipping options, an all-discrete analog octave circuit, and an independent clean boost.

The three clipping modes are OpAmp (no diodes, maximum grinding gain), Asymmetrical (two silicon diodes + one LED for smooth, valve-like crunch), and Symmetrical (the classic double silicon diode configuration). Each mode delivers a noticeably different character, making the pedal adaptable to a wide range of rigs and playing styles.

The HalfLife uses an all-discrete analog full-wave rectifier circuit to generate the octave effect. It works best with single notes played above the 12th fret using the neck pickup. For the most dramatic effect, the Octave control can also be assigned to an expression pedal for hands-free octave blending during performance.

Yes, both the octave distortion and the booster have their own dedicated footswitches and can be used independently or simultaneously. The right footswitch activates the octave distortion; the left footswitch activates the boost.

Flexi-Switch is EarthQuaker Devices' relay-based true bypass switching system that supports both latching and momentary operation from the same footswitch. Tap once to latch the effect on; hold the switch for momentary use that bypasses automatically when released. Note that because the switching is relay-based, the pedal requires power to pass signal.
