Electro Voice RE20 Classic Broadcast Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

If the golden age of radio had a physical form, it would be the Electro-Voice RE20. This dynamic cardioid microphone is the heavyweight champion of the broadcast world, blending the warm, authoritative tone of classic FM radio with the precision needed for modern production.

It's a true workhorse, built to capture the subtle nuances of human speech as flawlessly as the chest-thumping impact of a kick drum. You get the massive, larger-than-life sound of a premium condenser mic wrapped in a rugged, forgiving dynamic design that begs to be pushed to its limits.

Electro-Voice RE20 The Voice of Authority

    The Voice of Authority

Most microphones punish you for getting too close, turning a warm baritone into a muddy mess. The RE20 rewrites the rules of acoustic physics with its legendary Variable-D design. You can lean in, lean back, or move around the mic without constantly riding the EQ knob to fix the tone. It gives broadcasters, podcasters, and vocalists a massive, forgiving sweet spot, ensuring your voice always sounds rich, robust, and beautifully balanced.

    • Variable-D Technology: Say farewell to the dreaded proximity effect. This brilliant acoustic design maintains a smooth, uniform frequency response regardless of how close you get to the microphone.
    • Internal P-Pop Filter: Plosives are a problem of the past. The heavy-duty internal acoustic filter tames harsh "P" and "B" sounds, letting you speak directly into the grille without an external pop shield.
    • Element Shock Mount: Desk thumps and floor vibrations ruin good takes. The internal shock mount isolates the microphone element, keeping handling noise and structural rumbles completely out of your mix.

    A Beast on the Backline

Don’t let its reputation as a broadcast microphone fool you; this heavy metal cylinder is a formidable weapon in the live room. Because it handles extreme sound pressure levels without breaking a sweat, sound engineers constantly reach for it when tracking loud, aggressive sources. It thrives in chaotic acoustic environments, pulling pristine audio out of blaring amplifiers and resonant acoustic instruments with equal grace.

    • Kick Drum King: Slide it inside a bass drum and listen to it shine. The RE20 captures the aggressive beater click and the deep, resonant boom without overloading your preamp.
    • Brass and Woodwind Brilliance: Horns can sound piercing through the wrong microphone. The smooth, flat frequency response of the RE20 easily tames the shrill top-end of trumpets, saxophones, and accordions.
    • Guitar Amp Articulation: Point it at a loud guitar cabinet to capture the authentic, uncolored tone of your amplifier, from sparkling clean chords to thick, overdriven riffs.

    Electro-Voice RE20 Built to Last

    Built to Last

Microphones get dropped, bumped, and battered. It looks like a piece of vintage industrial art and feels incredibly solid in the hand, machined from heavy steel to protect the delicate acoustic components inside.

    • Bass Roll-Off Switch: Got a rumbly room or a booming acoustic guitar? Flip the built-in bass tilt-down switch to instantly tighten up the low end and remove unwanted low-frequency mud.
    • True Cardioid Pattern: The RE20 rejects off-axis sounds from the back and sides, ensuring it only captures what is directly in front of it — even in untreated, noisy rooms.
    • Indestructible Steel Chassis: Engineered for absolute reliability, the rugged casing protects the capsule from catastrophic impacts, ensuring it performs flawlessly session after session.

The Ultimate Broadcast and Studio Staple

The Electro Voice RE20 is what happens when acoustic brilliance meets bulletproof engineering. It captures the soul of spoken word while offering the sheer brawn required to track the loudest instruments in your studio. It’s a microphone for creators who demand pristine, authoritative audio without constantly fighting their gear.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Electro Voice RE20

Is the Electro Voice RE20 good for podcasting?

Yes, the RE20 is an industry-standard broadcast microphone that provides a rich, radio-ready voice tone. Its Variable-D technology and internal pop filter make it incredibly forgiving for podcasters who move around while speaking.

Does the Electro Voice RE20 need phantom power?

No, the RE20 is a dynamic microphone, meaning it does not require 48V phantom power to operate. However, because it has a low output level, you may need a high-quality preamp or an inline gain booster to get a strong signal.

What is Variable-D on the RE20?

Variable-D is an exclusive Electro-Voice design feature that eliminates the proximity effect. It ensures your voice maintains a consistent, natural tone without unwanted bass buildup, even if you move extremely close to the microphone.

How does the RE20 compare to the SM7B?

Both are legendary broadcast microphones, but the RE20 has a flatter bass response and eliminates proximity effect via Variable-D. The SM7B tends to have a slightly flatter midrange, while the RE20 is often preferred for a more authoritative, natural low-end tone.

Can you use the RE20 for recording kick drums?

Absolutely. The RE20 can handle extremely high sound pressure levels and captures a fantastic balance of deep low-end thump and snappy beater attack, making it a favorite among studio engineers for kick drums.

    Electro Voice RE20 Features:

    • Variable-D technology eliminates proximity effect for consistent tonal quality
    • Heavy-duty internal P-pop filter eliminates the need for external pop shields
    • Internal element shock mount drastically reduces vibration-induced noise
    • True cardioid polar pattern provides excellent off-axis rejection
    • Bass roll-off switch to control low-frequency rumble and room noise
    • Handles extreme sound pressure levels, perfect for kick drums and amps

    Real Broadcast sound

Professional sounding studio quality mic at an affordable price point! I read the reviews and bought the EV mic because of the price. After using it for on air broadcasting, Webcasting and voiceover I am very impressed. Only negative is I had to purchase a cloud lifter to boost the sound output.

    Smooth, great rejection

This is a classic mic. Works great for pretty much every application you can throw at it. For my application, it is a remote lesson mic and a live performance mic (for sax). It is a great open sounding mic, and it's Variable D stuff makes the low notes NOT stand out.
