The Explorer first arrived in 1958 with a radical design that was decades ahead of its time. While its futuristic shape was initially misunderstood, players eventually embraced its bold styling and commanding tone. By the 1980s, the Explorer had become a defining instrument of hard rock and heavy metal, earning its place in the hands of some of the genre's most influential guitarists.
Now available in a striking Gun Metal Grey finish, the Epiphone Explorer 80s – EMG channels the attitude and performance of the iconic 1984 model. Inspired by one of the most recognizable Explorers ever produced, it delivers the aggressive styling, crushing tone, and unmistakable stage presence that helped define an era. The sleek Gun Metal Grey finish enhances the Explorer's angular silhouette with a modern industrial look that's built to command attention.
The Explorer 80s – EMG features a mahogany body paired with a fast-playing mahogany neck carved to a comfortable 60s SlimTaper profile. The rosewood fretboard is outfitted with 22 medium jumbo frets and pearloid dot inlays, providing a familiar feel for effortless playability. The Explorer headstock is equipped with mini die-cast tuners and a Graph Tech nut for dependable tuning stability, while an Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge and LockTone Stop Bar tailpiece deliver outstanding sustain and precise intonation.
Powering the guitar is a legendary set of active EMG pickups, with an EMG 60 in the neck position and an EMG 81 in the bridge. Together, they produce the tight low end, articulate highs, and high-output punch that became the sound of countless hard rock and metal recordings throughout the 1980s. A rear-mounted battery compartment provides quick access for the required 9-volt battery.
The electronics feature individual volume controls for each pickup and a master tone control with knurled metal knobs for a clean, purposeful appearance. The pickguard-free body design further emphasizes the Explorer's aggressive lines, while the Gun Metal Grey finish gives this classic shape a bold, contemporary edge.
An Epiphone premium gig bag is included to help protect your Explorer wherever your music takes you.
Note: A 9-volt battery is required to power the active EMG pickups and is not included.
