The J-45 expands its renowned voice with six additional strings
The J-45 stands among the most iconic acoustic guitars ever made. First introduced in 1942, it soon became known as “The Workhorse.” As Gibson’s best-selling acoustic guitar of all time and the flagship of the round-shoulder dreadnought family, it has earned a lasting place in music history. The J-45 Standard 12-String builds on that celebrated foundation with a rich, shimmering voice and now features the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system, delivering amplified acoustic tone that faithfully conveys the guitar’s natural character and the subtleties of every performance.
Built with a round-shoulder dreadnought body, the J-45 Standard 12-String pairs solid mahogany back and sides with a solid Sitka spruce top. Traditional scalloped X-bracing helps shape its resonant voice, while multi-ply top binding and single-ply back binding add classic visual appeal. This time-tested tonewood recipe enhances the depth, sparkle, and natural chorus effect that define a great 12-string, bringing added richness and articulation to chords, melodic lines, and open-position textures, all while preserving the comfortable feel and familiar silhouette that have long distinguished the J-45. A gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish completes its timeless Workhorse look.
Its mahogany neck features the comfortable and fast-playing SlimTaper profile and is joined to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint secured using hot hide glue. A wider 1.875-inch bone nut provides appropriate string spacing for the 12-string layout, while the Indian rosewood fretboard offers a 12-inch radius, 20 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl dot inlays. Nickel-plated Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners ensure smooth, accurate tuning adjustments across all 12 strings.
The reverse-belly rosewood bridge is outfitted with a bone saddle and TUSQ bridge pins, while a tortoiseshell teardrop pickguard reinforces the guitar’s unmistakable J-45 styling.
The J-45 Standard 12-String now comes equipped with the Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. This active design employs two lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate, each paired with a carefully optimized preamp. The result is a full, natural amplified acoustic sound that captures the instrument’s unique voice without altering its unplugged tone. The Baggs HiFi DNA system also delivers gain-before-feedback performance comparable to that of an under-saddle pickup.
