First introduced in 1932, the L-00 remains the most iconic and widely recognized small-body acoustic guitar in Gibson’s storied history. Handcrafted by Gibson’s expert acoustic luthiers in Bozeman, Montana, the L-00 Special offers players a USA-built Gibson acoustic guitar at a highly accessible price point.
The L-00 Special features a classic small-body design constructed with solid mahogany back and sides paired with a solid Sitka spruce top, reinforced with Gibson’s traditional scalloped X-bracing. This time-tested tonewood combination delivers a balanced, responsive voice with excellent dynamic range for a compact acoustic guitar. Single-ply binding outlines both the top and back, adding a touch of understated elegance.
The L-00’s narrower waist contributes to its focused, nuanced sound, naturally producing a leaner, tighter bass response that sits perfectly in the mix. Its tonal character makes it especially well suited for fingerstyle playing and blues, while remaining versatile enough for a wide range of musical genres and playing styles.
The utile neck is joined to the body with a compound dovetail neck-to-body joint and, like all Gibson acoustic guitars, is secured using hot hide glue for optimal resonance. It features a comfortable, fast-playing SlimTaper profile, while the rosewood fretboard has a 12” radius, 19 standard frets, and mother-of-pearl dot inlays.
A closed-slot rectangular rosewood bridge is fitted with a TUSQ saddle, and the nut and bridge pins are also TUSQ for enhanced tonal transfer and tuning stability. Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners provide smooth, reliable performance. The L-00 Special is finished in satin nitrocellulose lacquer.
For stage and studio use, it comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element Bronze active under-saddle piezo pickup and preamp, with an easy-to-access soundhole-mounted volume control, making it performance-ready right out of the box. A premium soft shell case is included.
