The King of the Flat-Tops
The enduring legacy of Gibson’s “King of the Flat-Tops” continues with the SJ-200 Original. Since its debut in 1937, the SJ-200 has stood as a benchmark for both visual elegance and commanding acoustic tone. Now featuring the Gibson-exclusive, custom-voiced Baggs HiFi DNA™ pickup system, it faithfully captures the guitar’s powerful character and the subtle details of every performance with remarkable authenticity when amplified.
For generations, the SJ-200 has been the choice of artists spanning country, folk, rock, film, and television. Its unmistakable sound has shaped countless recordings and its iconic silhouette has graced stages around the globe. Today, it carries forward the tradition of one of the world’s most celebrated acoustic guitars, delivering a distinctive presence in both sound and appearance.
Built with a solid Sitka spruce top and flame maple back and sides, the SJ-200 Original produces a bold, projecting voice with exceptional clarity. Appointments inspired by Gibson’s Golden Era reflect its historic roots, while a gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish, gold hardware, and refined decorative elements underscore the model’s renowned sophistication. The two-piece maple neck features a comfortable Rounded profile and is topped with a rosewood fretboard carrying 20 standard frets and mother-of-pearl graduated crown inlays, one of the instrument’s most recognizable visual signatures.
The headstock showcases the Gibson logo and crown in mother-of-pearl inlays, while gold Gotoh Keystone tuners and a bone nut provide dependable tuning stability and smooth operation. An engraved tortoiseshell-colored SJ-200 pickguard complements the carved four-bar Moustache bridge, which is crafted from rosewood and fitted with a bone saddle and TUSQ® bridge pins. Together, these classic design touches honor the heritage of the King of the Flat-Tops while maintaining the unmistakable identity of the SJ-200.
At the heart of the SJ-200 Original is the all-new Gibson-exclusive Baggs HiFi DNA pickup system. This active design employs two lightweight sensors mounted to the internal bridge plate, paired with individually optimized preamps to reproduce a rich, natural amplified acoustic sound. The system preserves the guitar’s unique voice and personality without affecting its unplugged performance. It also delivers gain-before-feedback performance comparable to an under-saddle pickup. Convenient soundhole-mounted volume and tone controls allow quick adjustments while playing and remain virtually unnoticed by the audience.
A Gibson hardshell case is included, ensuring the SJ-200 Original is ready for the stage, the studio, and every destination along the way.
