Heritage Audio Symph EQ Stereo Asymptotic Equalizer

If Peter Baxandall's 1952 circuit design had a sophisticated, modern-day successor built for mastering engineers, it would be the Heritage Audio Symph EQ.

This rack-mounted stereo equalizer takes the fundamental concept of Baxandall shelving EQ and refines it into something far more musical — replacing its aging topology with a parallel equalizing circuit that delivers strikingly low phase deviation and a sound that audio engineers describe as tight, sweet, and natural. Packed into a single rack space and engineered with transformer-balanced I/O, the Symph EQ is built to sit confidently on the master bus of any serious studio.

Heritage Audio Symph EQ Shelf EQ with Surgical Precision

    Shelf EQ With Surgical Precision

The high and low shelf bands are the heart of the Symph EQ, and Heritage Audio has gone to great lengths to make them both precise and musical. The asymptotic shelf curves — from which the unit takes its name — allow boost or cut to grow smoothly until the asymptotic value is reached, keeping ultra-highs and sub-lows under firm control at all times. The result is a shelving EQ that enhances without over-processing.

    • High Shelf Band (8–24 kHz): Six frequency choices across 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 24 kHz, with up to 10.5 dB of boost or cut in precise 0.5 dB increments via a main rotary switch and a dedicated 0.5 dB step button.
    • Low Shelf Band (20–470 Hz): Six frequency choices spanning 20, 60, 110, 220, 360, and 470 Hz, offering the same 0.5 dB resolution for dialing in the perfect low-end balance without muddying the mix.
    • CUT Button: Instantly mirrors any boost value as an equivalent cut, making it fast and intuitive to switch between enhancement and reduction — ideal for quick A/B comparisons during a mastering session.

High and Low Pass Filters That Keep Things Clean

Beyond its shelving capabilities, the Symph EQ includes 2-pole, 12 dB/octave high and low pass filters mounted on dual concentric rotary switches. These are not an afterthought — they're an essential tool for managing the spectral extremes that can make or break a mix.

    • Low Pass Filter (10–30 kHz): Five frequency options — 10, 12, 18, 22, and 30 kHz — plus an OFF position, giving engineers precise control over ultrasonic content without affecting the audible high-frequency range.
    • High Pass Filter (15–160 Hz): Five frequency options — 15, 20, 47, 82, and 160 Hz — plus an OFF position, making it easy to clean up subsonic rumble and low-end buildup with a natural-sounding roll-off.
    • Dual Concentric Design: The concentric rotary layout keeps the front panel clean and workflow-friendly, allowing both filters to be adjusted quickly and independently without hunting across a cluttered interface.

Heritage Audio Symph EQ Transformer Balanced I/O

    Transformer-Balanced I/O and M/S Processing

This is where the Symph EQ steps beyond a great-sounding shelving EQ and becomes a genuinely exceptional mastering tool. Heritage Audio has loaded it with the same premium transformers found across their acclaimed product family and added built-in Mid/Side processing that opens up a whole new dimension of stereo control.

    • Carnhill Input Transformers: The same exclusive Carnhill transformers made in Oxford that appear in the Heritage Audio Successor provide the Symph EQ with a refined, musical input stage that adds just the right amount of character to the signal path.
    • Class A Output Amplifiers with Carnhill St'Ives Output Transformers: All outputs are driven by 73-type Class A amplifiers using Carnhill St'Ives output transformers — consistent with the rest of the Heritage Audio family and a key contributor to the unit's cohesive, full-bodied sound.
    • Built-in Mid/Side (M/S) Capabilities: The Symph EQ's onboard M/S processing lets engineers apply equalization independently to the center and sides of the stereo field, enabling level corrections, width adjustments, and tonal shaping that would otherwise require an external M/S matrix.

    The Full Picture

The Heritage Audio Symph EQ is a master bus equalizer that respects audio engineering history while meeting modern mastering demands. Its asymptotic shelf curves, low phase deviation, and premium transformer-balanced signal path create a refined, musical sound.

With onboard M/S processing and precise 0.5 dB stepped controls, this single-rack unit can handle everything from subtle tonal corrections to bold creative shaping. For engineers seeking a high-quality stereo EQ with genuine depth and flexibility, the Symph EQ delivers.
