Solid State Logic B-DYN 500 Series Dynamics Module

If you could capture the punch of Phil Collins' legendary drum fill in "In the Air Tonight" or the raw power of Peter Gabriel's vocals on "Intruder," you'd get something close to the SSL B-DYN.

This 500 Series module brings the bold, punchy compression of SSL's first-ever console, the SL 4000 B from 1976, straight to your lunchbox rack. Originally housed in iconic studios like London’s Townhouse Studio "Stone Room," Montreal’s Le Studio, and LA’s Record Plant, the B console helped define the sound of the '80s. Now, you can infuse that same saturated, character-rich compression into drums, vocals, bass, or anything that needs an edge — without hunting down a vintage console.

Solid State Logic B-DYN 500 Series Compression with Character and Attitude

    Compression with Character and Attitude

The compressor/limiter section is where the B-DYN truly shows off its vintage character. This isn’t about subtle, transparent gain reduction — it’s the unmistakable sound of analog hardware adding warmth and color with every dB of compression. The stepped ratio control offers three fixed settings, plus a DS mode, while the threshold knob includes automatic makeup gain to keep levels consistent as you increase compression. SSL has also improved the threshold control’s linearity compared to the original console version, making it easier to fine-tune with the compact 500 Series knobs.

    • Three Compression Ratios Plus DS Mode: Dial in gentle 2:1 smoothing, classic 4:1 tracking compression, or aggressive 10:1 limiting. The DS mode offers a specialized 10:1 ratio with a 12 dB/octave high-pass sidechain filter centered at 7 kHz, perfect for taming vocal sibilance while preserving the body of the sound.
    • Program-Dependent Release Times: Choose from six release settings (0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 seconds, plus DS and Auto). The Auto setting, borrowed from the legendary SSL Bus Compressor, dynamically adapts the release time to the input signal for natural compression that breathes with the track.
    • Sidechain High-Pass Filter at 185 Hz: Flip the HPF switch to roll off low frequencies in the detector circuit at 6 dB/octave. This prevents kick drums and bass from causing unwanted pumping, keeping the compression focused on the midrange and highs.

    De-Ess Mode: Tame Vocal Sibilance

When you set both the ratio and release controls to DS, the B-DYN morphs into a specialized broadband de-esser optimized for controlling harsh vocal sibilance. Unlike multiband processors that only duck high frequencies, this delivers full-spectrum gain reduction triggered by sibilant content — keeping your vocal tone intact while smoothing out those piercing "ess" sounds.

The DS release automatically varies between 30 and 50 ms based on the input signal, significantly faster than typical SSL dynamics sections. Attack time also drops to a lightning-fast 2 ms (compared to the standard 30 ms), making this mode incredibly responsive to transient peaks.

    • Broadband Compression Triggered by Sibilance: The 10:1 ratio works across the entire frequency spectrum but is triggered by a filtered sidechain signal, so it only clamps down when harsh highs appear. No unnatural tonal splitting or "lisping" artifacts — just smooth, controlled vocals.
    • Variable Release Between 30–50 ms: The DS release adapts on the fly to the dynamics of your vocal performance, preventing that over-compressed "pumping" sound while still catching every sibilant spike.
    • Fast 2 ms Attack Time: Slightly quicker than even the E-Series Dynamics on its fast setting, this ultra-responsive attack grabs transients before they can poke through, making it ideal for aggressive vocals or snappy snare drums.

Solid State Logic B-DYN 500 Series Gate/Expander: Clean Up Your Tracks

    Gate/Expander: Clean Up Your Tracks

The B-DYN's gate/expander section is your secret weapon for eliminating bleed, taming room noise, and adding rhythmic punch. It can function as a hard 20:1 gate for aggressive cutting or switch to a gentle 2:1 expander curve for subtler dynamic control below the threshold. With an attack time of just 0.2 ms, it's fast enough to let transients through cleanly while choking off unwanted noise between hits. Five release time settings (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 seconds) give you precise control over how long the gate stays open after your signal drops below threshold.

    • 20:1 Gate or 2:1 Expander Modes: Hard gate mode is perfect for drums, cutting room mics between hits with surgical precision. Expander mode offers a softer, more musical slope for sources like overheads or vocals where you want to reduce bleed without completely chopping off sustain.
    • Range Control for Maximum Gain Reduction: Dial in exactly how much attenuation you want when the gate closes — from subtle background cleanup to total silence. Set it to "out" and the gate/expander is completely bypassed, letting you use only the compressor when needed.
    • Stereo Link for Paired Operation: Connect two B-DYN modules via your rack's link pins and engage the Link button to sum the sidechain signals. When processing stereo sources like drum overheads or a vocal bus, this prevents image shifts by ensuring both channels open and close together based on the loudest signal.

    Built for Today's Hybrid Studio

The B-DYN brings classic analog sound to modern workflows. Compatible with any API 500 Series rack, it draws phantom power and integrates seamlessly into analog or hybrid setups. Two LED columns provide clear feedback: gate/expander activity on the right and compressor gain reduction on the left. Features like an IN button for instant A/B comparisons and improved threshold control make it intuitive and efficient.

Perfect for '80s drum sounds or dynamic processing with serious vibe, the SSL B-DYN offers grabby, saturated compression with unapologetic analog character.
