Tone King Iron Man II Attenuator

Your tube amp sounds like magic when it’s cranked to ten. The only downside? Your neighbors, your landlord, and the local police department don't share your passion for that volume.

Enter the Tone King Iron Man II — a 100-watt reactive power attenuator designed for guitarists who want face-melting tone without losing the overall character to their sound. While cheap attenuators suck the soul out of your signal, the Iron Man II keeps your tone's sparkle, bite, and sweet harmonic bloom completely intact. You get pure, unadulterated power-tube saturation at volume levels that won't make your family question their life choices.

Tone King Iron Man II Reactive Load Technology That Actually Gets It

Reactive Load Technology That Actually Gets It

Most attenuators treat your amplifier like it's plugged into a brick wall — a simple resistive load that kills dynamics and sucks the soul right out of your tone. The Iron Man II thinks differently. Its tuned reactive load circuit was designed by carefully measuring real speaker impedance curves and then refining the result empirically until it behaved like an actual speaker. That means your amp reacts the way it was designed to — naturally, dynamically, and with full feel — no matter where the volume sits.

    • Tuned Reactive Load Circuit: Engineered to replicate the complex impedance behavior of a real speaker across all frequencies, preserving the authentic interaction between your amp and its load for natural power-tube overdrive and distortion.
    • 18 Distinct Attenuation Settings: From barely kissed to bedroom-friendly, 18 steps of precise volume reduction let you dial in exactly the output level you need while your amp continues running at full power.
    • Full Output Power Operation: Your amplifier pushes everything it has — the Iron Man II simply decides how much of that power reaches the speakers, letting the rest dissipate internally without compromising feel or response.

Transformer Coupling and a DI That Actually Delivers

Most attenuators use a resistor ladder to divide power, resulting in a duller top end and muddied lows. The Iron Man II sidesteps this entirely with 100% transformer coupling through custom audio transformers, with each step of the attenuation dial getting its own dedicated transformer tap. And the new-generation Iron Man II adds an analog speaker cabinet simulation via balanced XLR DI output that actually sounds good — not "good for a DI," just genuinely good. Tone King developed this analog circuit by comparing it directly against some of the most complex computer-based impulse responses on the market, then refined it until it held its own.

    • 100% Transformer-Coupled Power Division: Custom audio transformers handle every stage of attenuation, ensuring the amplifier-to-speaker connection is never contaminated by resistive loading or frequency-dependent signal degradation.
    • Preserved Frequency Response: By eliminating resistor-ladder voltage division, the Iron Man II keeps your high-end sparkle and low-end definition exactly where they belong — intact and uncolored at every attenuation level.
    • Analog Speaker Cabinet Simulation (XLR DI): A real analog circuit delivers a natural, speaker-like tone directly to the board or interface, with mic position switching and level and ground-lift controls to keep your signal clean and compatible with any mixing environment.

Tone King Iron Man II Solo Mode and Impedance Matching: The Details That Matter

Solo Mode and Impedance Matching: The Details That Matter

The Iron Man II doesn't stop at attenuation. It comes loaded with a Solo mode that lets you toggle between two volume levels via the included footswitch — ideal for jumping from a rhythm setting to a lead volume that cuts through without requiring a dedicated boost pedal. On top of that, dual impedance controls on both the amplifier input and speaker output let you mismatch-proof your rig, even when your speaker cabinet and amp head don't share the same impedance rating.

    • Solo Mode with Footswitch: Toggle instantly between two pre-set volume levels during a performance — one for your rhythm parts, one for your leads — without touching the attenuator dial mid-song.
    • Dual Impedance Controls: Independent impedance matching for both the amplifier input and speaker output means you can confidently pair mismatched heads and cabinets without risking tone loss or amplifier stress.
    • Included Footswitch: The Solo mode footswitch comes in the box, ready to use, because the only thing better than a great feature is one that doesn't require an extra purchase.

The Attenuator Your Amp Has Always Deserved

The Tone King Iron Man II is what happens when an engineer refuses to accept "good enough" as an answer. Every design decision — from the reactive load circuit to the transformer-coupled attenuation to the analog DI — exists because the simpler, cheaper approach wasn't worth building. If you've ever cranked an amp in a bedroom and felt the tone disappear under attenuation, the Iron Man II is the answer you've been waiting for. It's not just a volume knob for your amp. It's an attenuator that actually respects what your amp is trying to say.

This thing is awesome. No more too loud.

My wife and neighbors do not like loud like I do. However, this not so little guy makes all of the tone and character of my very loud Traynor Custom Reverb come out without rattling my eyes in their sockets. And while I personally love that sensation, I also like not having the glare/stare of others...

    Absolutely Brilliant

I have a Mesa Boogie F-50 (50-watt) that I haven't been able to use because it's too loud for bedroom playing. The Iron Man II wrangles the volume perfectly without impacting the tone. I should've bought this years ago. If you're on the fence - just go for it. You won't regret it.

    Excellent Attenuator

I've owned quite a few different styles of attenuators from quite a few different manufacturers. Currently, the Ironman II is my favorite pure attenuator. I also like the Fryette (and own one), but audibly, I could not tell you which one sounds the best, which is a good thing, because that means bot...

    Frequently Asked Questions

The Iron Man II uses a tuned reactive load circuit and 100% transformer-coupled power division, which preserves your amp's natural tone and feel far more effectively than standard resistive attenuators. Most attenuators dull your top end and muddy your lows. This one doesn't.

The Iron Man II features dual impedance controls for both the amplifier input and speaker output, making it compatible with a wide range of amp and cabinet combinations, even mismatched ones. Check your amp's output impedance and match it using the onboard controls for best results.

Yes. The Iron Man II includes an analog speaker cabinet simulation with a balanced XLR DI output, allowing you to record directly to an interface or send signal to front of house without a microphone or cabinet. It also includes a load function for silent recording.

Solo mode lets you switch between two different attenuation levels using the included footswitch, which is handy for jumping between a quieter rhythm volume and a louder lead level during a live performance without manually adjusting the dial.

If preserving your amp's tone at lower volumes is a priority, yes. The transformer-coupled design and reactive load circuit represent a significantly higher level of engineering than budget attenuators offer. The difference in feel and frequency response is noticeable, particularly on high-quality tube amplifiers.
