It was 1942, and Gibson had set out to make a sturdy, reliable guitar that embodied the spirit of music while keeping things simple and straightforward. Enter the Gibson J-45, a round-shoulder dreadnought acoustic aptly nicknamed 'The Workhorse.' For over 75 years, the J-45 has stood as a Gibson top-seller and as one of the most popular acoustic guitars in history, guided by its robust build and tone. The list of iconic performers who have been associated with the J-45 is a long and constantly growing one - Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, James Taylor, David Gilmour, Aimee Mann, Brad Paisley are just a few of the musicians who put their creative trust into the instrument. The Gibson J-45's smooth bottom end and crisp highs combine with its muscular projection for an instrument this is equally at home in the studio as it is on the stage. AMS is your stop for this iconic instrument - get yours today with the help of one of our True 0% interest payment plans!

Few acoustics carry the weight and reputation of the Gibson J-45. Nicknamed “The Workhorse,” this slope-shouldered icon has anchored countless records, stages, and writing sessions since 1942. Known for its balanced tone, dynamic response, and earthy good looks, the J-45 guitar is the gold standard for singer-songwriters, session players, and pros across every genre.
At American Musical Supply, you’ll find a full lineup of Gibson J-45 guitars, from timeless Standards and faded vintage-style models to artist signature editions and modern Studio builds. Whether you’re chasing classic warmth or looking for a J-45 that fits your unique voice, AMS has the gear, the support, and the flexible payment plans to get you playing.
The Gibson Standard J-45 is famous for its warm, balanced tone: rich in the mids, smooth on the low end, and clear without being brittle on the highs. That classic slope-shouldered body shape gives it a naturally compressed, focused sound that sits beautifully in a mix or holds its own onstage.
Whether you’re fingerpicking, flatpicking, or strumming hard, the Standard J-45 guitar responds with dynamic sensitivity and just the right amount of natural woodiness. Mahogany back and sides pair with a Sitka Spruce top to create that unmistakable blend of warmth and articulation. It's tone that feels broken-in from the first chord and only gets better with time.
While every Gibson J-45 guitar shares the same legendary foundation as the Standard, AMS offers a range of models tailored to different players, tones, and budgets.
Slightly slimmer with Walnut or Rosewood back and sides, the Studio version keeps the J-45’s tone intact in a lighter, more affordable package — great for players who want comfort without compromise.
Vintage feel, satin nitro finishes, and a punchy, dry tone straight out of the golden era. These J-45 guitars are all vibe.
Loaded with custom specs from the man himself, the Slash Signature J-45 includes a C-profile neck, flatter fingerboard radius, and rich rosewood back and sides.
For collectors and tone purists, AMS also offers select Gibson Custom Shop J-45 guitars and rare reissues; think banner-era specs, custom woods, and stunning finishes.
When you shop for a Gibson J-45 guitar at AMS, you're not just getting a legendary acoustic; you’re getting a hassle-free experience built around musicians. Enjoy 0% interest payment plans that let you split the cost without jumping through hoops. Most orders ship VERY fast and free, so your new J-45 hits your doorstep ready to play.

Yes! Most Gibson J-45 guitars come equipped with LR Baggs VTC electronics, giving you clear, natural-sounding amplified tone. They’re built for stage use and sound great straight into a PA or acoustic amp.
While the J-45 is a professional-level instrument, it’s also beginner-friendly thanks to its smooth neck, balanced tone, and forgiving feel. It's an investment, but one that grows with you. For beginners who want that classic J-45 look and sound without the “Gibson-level” investment, check out the Epiphone J-45.
Classic Vintage Sunburst is the most iconic, but AMS also carries models in Natural, Wine Red, Cherry, and exclusive Faded finishes. Each finish has its own visual vibe, but the tone stays pure J-45.
