AMS Is the Walrus - Jam Band with Walrus Audio

I am the Walrus! Nope this is not a prank. The AMS crew is swimming in Walrus Audio gear. Someone might have left a few pedals (a whole pedalboard) behind after our interview with Walrus Audio. So, we had to take this opportunity and jam out to the Beatles’ hit “I am the Walrus.” This AMS video won’t go with peanut butter, but it is a good JAM… Don’t worry I can hear the crickets.

If you were wondering how to recreate that classic Beatles sound, we’ve got you covered. In this Walrus Jam Band, we have Kelly on vocals, Tommy on drums, Russ on the keys, Jake on bass, and two Ryans: one on a 6 string the other on a 12. Unlike the “I am the Walrus” song, we will be giving you the scoop on all of the Walrus Audio pedals we used to get that distorted tone.

Ryan’s 6-String Set up

Ryan wanted his six-string Les Paul to capture that authentic Beatles tone. He picked Walrus Audio Eons Five-State Fuzz. It wont overload with distortion but can almost recreate that pedalboard clipping effect that was common on those Beatles tracks. The Walrus Audio Eons is capable of big sound with its Voltage knob that can go up to 18 volts. This fuzz pedal also drops back to 3 volts to help dial back that power, but we tend to jam loud.

To give it a double track feel Ryan added the Walrus Audio Julia V2 Analog Chorus Vibrato Pedal into the mix. The Julia pedal is popular for its wide range of chorus and vibrato effects with the ability to fine tune each. While most chorus vibrato pedals are able to switch between effects, the Julia pedal can blend dry, chorus, and vibrato. That’s what allowed Ryan to add just the right amount of vibrato to the tone.

Kelly’s Vocal Arrangement

Kelly was singing into the AEA KU5A, and it was also running through a set of Walrus Audio gear. She ran the mic into the Walrus Audio Canvas Re-Amp Pedal to the Eras five Five-State Distortion Pedal to give some high-gain distortion on the vocal. Since the song called for it, she added the Walrus Audio Melee Wall of Noise Reverb and Distortion for more distortion and that wicked reverb at the end of the song.

Since Kelly stacked the distortion, she didn’t want the reverb to get lonely! With the Walrus Audio SLOER Stereo Ambient Reverb Pedal it sends all that distortion to a Beatles dreamscape! She dropped the mix and decay and put the filter and depth at 12 o’clock and turned on rain mode. Finally adding the Canvas Mono to properly balance the signal.

Fun Fact: While it’s hard to hear Kelly during that distorted reverb, she was saying 12-Pay, alluding to the fantastic AMS monthly payment options we carry!

Processing Tommy’s Drums

If you need a multi-FX  percussion processing unit to add some razzle dazzle to your drums look no further. The Walrus Audio DFX-1 can add delay, reverb and compression with tons of tone shaping options. It can do so much more like saturation, tap temp, gating, with a flexible EQ!

Tommy was looking for a little compression, so he set that up first. He then added a little reverb in and fine tuned the delay to give it a big boomy sound. Finally he pulled back a little on his compressor to get more crunch and a tighter sound, and he was practically Ringo Starr out there!

The Other Ryan’s 12 String Punch-in

Ryan kept it pretty simple with this super powerful Walrus Audio’s Mako Series MKII: R1 High-fidelity Reverb Pedal on the plate setting. This is a multifunction reverb pedal that can help you gently fill a small room or shake a stadium with a holy reverberation — in true Beatle fashion, of course.

The Key to Russ’s Sound

Russ kept it very simple and effective on the Nord Stage 4 with a fundamental overdrive pedal. He turned the gain all the way down to add a little extra dirt. The tone was right in the middle, and the volume was maxed out. He also set the crunch switch to smooth. From there they took the Canvas Stereo Direct Box Line Isolator which took that balanced signal all the way to the sound guy! Speaking of the sound guy…

Jake the Bass/Sound Guy

For this jam, Jake used the Mantle Bass Pre-Amp/DI pedal and the Ages Five Stage Overdrive Pedal. He turned the gain all the way up to 8 on the Mantle, while adding a little bit of treble and extra bass. Jake Described it as “a high quality console pre-amp for your pedalboard,” and he’s right. The Ages Five Stage Overdrive Pedal had the gain turned all the way down and the dry signal was all the way up which worked out to be a great distortion for bass.

Thank You Walrus Audio!

We wanted to thank Walrus Audio for making this jam possible. Everything you heard was processed with Walrus Audio gear. We also have so much more Walrus Audio gear that you haven’t seen yet, so make your way on over to our shop and grab the pedal(s) of your dreams!
