The new Drive pedal from Empress Effects brings a tube-like overdrive to enhance your guitar tone, making it a great addition to your pedalboard. Not only does it deliver a nice, present overdrive sound, but it also features a built-in analog clipping meter for the retro vibe. It gives the pedal a classic, undeniable vintage aesthetic that just looks incredibly cool!
I got a chance to try out the Empress Overdrive here in the AMS studio, and I thought it was a solid OD that would work for anyone looking for that classic tube-driven tone. It wasn’t crazy, but it also wasn’t underpowered. It hit that sweet spot right down the middle.
Dialing It In
What’s really nice about this pedal is its tone-shaping capabilities, giving you an advantage when sculpting your tonal preference. Right out of the box, you’ll immediately notice that this pedal is pretty clear and smooth in the higher frequencies compared to your typical overdrive stomps.
To dial things in, you have your standard highly responsive Bass, Midrange, and Treble control knobs to sculpt your tone. Then you have a Gain knob which lets you determine exactly how hot you want the overdrive to push.
Right next to the gain sits the Mix control knob, which is a great feature for a drive pedal, giving you the power to blend your natural amp tone with the pedal's overdrive. This is really useful because it lets you retain your amp's core character while still reaping the tonal benefits of the Empress Drive's drive. This stood out because now you don’t have to be locked into one mode; you have options. Once you find the ideal balance, you can easily adjust the overall volume using the Output knob.
Moving onto the bottom row of controls, you get some more utility to your sound. You get a dedicated Boost knob to dial in exactly how much extra overdrive you want when engaging the boost footswitch. You can give it some more thickness by turning the Mid Freq knob, this can give you some more beef and character overall so your drive doesn’t sound like you're waving a thin sheet of paper. I’ve tried overdrive pedals that just suck the naturalness right out of my tone and made it sound too thin, here you have the ability to determine when enough is enough.
I'd say perhaps one of the smartest features on this unit is the built-in Gate knob. You don’t realize you need somewhat of a gate until you’re pushing saturation and the background noise is fighting for the spotlight alongside your actual signal… There’s no fun in trying to manage that.
Being able to adjust exactly how much of the noise gate you want to apply is a nice bonus. It keeps your high-gain settings locked-in tight and quiet, essentially giving you two pedals packed into one. Now you don't have to worry about searching for a gate pedal because you’ve got it covered right here.
I think this is a great pedal for anyone looking for a solid, dependable overdrive with enough flexibility to shape it to their existing rig. It delivers a pretty predictable sound, but in the best way possible. You know what you’re getting, and it responds consistently when you actually have it all dialed in. That makes it especially useful if you want something that can cover a range of styles without turning every adjustment into a guessing game. The added boost just makes this a way more practical option for live use, especially if you want to move between rhythm and lead tones without overcomplicating your setup.
Overall, I’d say the Empress Drive is definitely a solid fit for anyone playing rock, indie, and blues types of music styles — but it’s really for any player who values a nice and reliable overdrive with many tone sculpting options will find something to like.
